Water evaporates from oceans, rises as vapour, falls as rain, flows through rivers, and seeps into the ground — an endless journey that sustains all life on Earth.
Evaporation
The sun heats the ocean surface, turning liquid water into water vapour. This invisible vapour rises into the atmosphere — the first step of the water cycle.
Transpiration
Trees release water vapour through tiny pores in their leaves called stomata. Forests act like giant pumps, pushing moisture into the atmosphere.
Precipitation
Water vapour in clouds cools and condenses into droplets. When droplets grow heavy enough, they fall as rain — returning water to the land and oceans.
Surface Runoff
Rain that doesn't soak into the ground flows downhill over the surface as runoff. It collects into streams and rivers, carrying water back toward the ocean.
Infiltration
Some rainwater seeps into the soil and rock layers, slowly reaching the underground water table. This groundwater feeds wells and springs long after the rain has stopped.
