Every magnet has two opposite poles — north (N) and south (S). Around them stretches an invisible field of force. In 1845, Michael Faraday described this field as curving 'lines of force' running from N to S. Iron filings sprinkled near a magnet snap into alignment with these lines, making the pattern visible.
